What is a wet room?
A wetroom is fundamentally the same as a shower tray, wetroom formers are designed with gradient falls to move the water towards the drain, The fall however is only about 2 degrees so you will hardly see the different angles. Wetrooms allow you to achieve level access through the room that you are installing in meaning that there will be no step up to the wetroom former, and the tiles that are laid on the floor will follow through to the wetroom area.
Are wet room kits easy to install?
In most circumstances wet rooms are relatively easy to install, however you do need to take into account the different types of floors when installing a wet room. Fitters & customers are sometimes concerned that wet rooms will leak, however if installed correctly and instructions followed they are 100% waterproof.
Can I tile the wet room floor?
All wet room kits can be tiled on to, some wet room formers have different minimal tile sizes due to pressure loading, so on some foam based wet room formers like Marmox, PCS & Jackon you can use mosaics but they do have a minimal size. On foam based wet room formers you will not be able to use atrio vinyl like the type you see in hospitals, swimming pools and disabled areas, for this type of installation you will need to use a GRP wet room deck, these are glass reinforced plastic and are incredibly strong allowing for vinyl to be installed.
Are wet rooms waterproof?
Wet rooms are 100% waterproof and most warranties last for the life of tiles if installed correctly, There are 3 different types of waterproofing (gum based, fabric membrane and bitumen) and they are all 100% waterproof. Leaks usually occur when wet rooms have not being installed correctly either utilising to small a tile on the wet room deck or underboarding movement which gradually pops grouting out or by cutting corners.
How do I stop water going everywhere?
For most wet room installations you usually install a wet room screen, this stops most water from going everywhere. They can be hinged or static screens depending on the location of the wet room that you are installing. Ensure that you get a wet room screen that has been treated with Easyclean or Clean & Clear, this makes it ten times easier to clean if you are living in a hard water area.
There are so many different wet rooms which one should I choose?
It really does depend on budget and installation type, utilising a foam based wet room former will be cheaper however you will require it to be underboarded. This usually consists of 22mm Marine Ply which is not the cheapest and you have to cut this and fit this in between joists, If you utilise a wet room deck which is made of GRP you will not require underboarding as this will hold up to 70 stone across UK standard joists.
